War of 1812 begins.

Congress approves and President Madison signs a declaration of war against Great Britain. News of the declaration reaches Boston on June 24, 1812. The war, which John Lowell Jr. of Boston quickly dubs “Mr. Madison’s War,” ends in 1814.*
